Some people say ideas are a dime a dozen. Maybe. But I think quality ideas contain the following characteristics when applied to business:

  1. They make people take notice. Maybe it's a change in perception, or it could be a slight twist on an old idea that makes a product or service better for a client.
  2. It either saves money or makes money. No other way around it. An idea that doesn't is not worth spending time on in business. An idea can take you closer to, or farther from your goals.
  3. Other people "get it". Good ideas are usually simple enough for others to understand after only a minute of explanation. If your idea is more complex, simplify, draw it out, or rethink it.
  4. Clients feel good about it. When your clients aren't on board with an idea, chances are you're headed for trouble. There are some exceptions where clients can't see what you're trying to do until they can touch it, but be cautious.
  5. It jazzes you. Yep. If the idea makes you feel all warm and fuzzy and you're ready to go change the world with it, it could be that you're the champion that needs to make it happen. Few people find lasting success doing something they dislike.
